The sun has set here in Kangundo, and we’re heading into our final day of VBS. Tomorrow will also be our second to last day of the trip, which is shocking to us! Time has flown by. We have been so busy here, working hard in our own areas, and as a team. This week, Pastor Chris and Janet have been with the pastors of Kenya Evangelical Ministries and their wives, teaching them truth from the word of God.

Chris with Kenya Pastors Seminar 2019 resized

Pastor Chris taught the pastors about how to keep unity, and the things in our life that can tear it apart. Janet spoke to the women about being made in the image and likeness of God, the unique design of women, and how they are called to live as a wife of a pastor. This time at the Bible College has been prosperous, convicting, and eye opening. Thank you for all of your prayers! They have made all the difference! The Lord is certainly working in the lives of these brothers and sisters ways we cannot even see!

On Tuesday, we started our final session of VBS in Kyanchavi. It’s been exciting, yet challenging, starting again with a totally new location and group of children. We’re so thankful that it has gone well. This evening, we find ourselves gearing up for our final VBS day. As a team, we’ve been exposed to a lot of special music. We’ve really enjoyed learning the song, You Are So Faithful. We brought it to VBS yesterday, and the children knew it and loved it! We had approximately 100 kids today, and hope that even more will come tomorrow. Dave will be teaching them about Jesus walking on the water and calming the storm. As we are nearing the end of our time here, we are abundantly grateful. We’re humbled by the Lord’s protection and provision through this time. We feel the strength of your prayers, and we are especially grateful for the way you have faithfully stood by us. As we prepare to come home, we greatly appreciate your ongoing prayers.

Please pray for:

  • For our final day of VBS, that we may have the energy and insight to finish strong and encourage the children to follow Jesus!
  • For the hearts of these children, that they would be receptive to what we have to teach and they would remember this truth.
  • Pastor Chris’ final day with the pastors, that his mind would be clear as he speaks from his heart about how God calls them to deal with ministry challenges.
  • That we would remain flexible, adaptable, and teachable, even after we return home.
  • For our physical well-being, and rest during our final two nights here.
  • For lasting fruit from our time here in the lives of the children from VBS and the pastors and their wives.
  • As we celebrated the past 30 years of God’s faithfulness through Lois’ ministry in Kenya Evangelical Mission, that the next 30 years would be faithful and fruitful until the Lord returns (1 Thess. 4:16-18).
  • For safety in our travels, (and for our luggage to make it home safely too!)
  • Patience and grace through each phase of our journey home.

We’re reflecting on the incredible land, agriculture, and people of this country. We saw God’s creation firsthand on Friday, as Gideon drove us through the wildlife park. What an incredible experience- being inches away from some of the largest, most powerful animals on earth! On Saturday, Fitz led a hike to Thui Rock, a jaw-dropping view of Yatta Valley. As we made it to the top, we sat in silence and awe. There’s nothing like an incredible view to make you feel small, and to remember how big God is.

Today, Sunday the 18th, was the 30th anniversary celebration of Lois and Hoyt’s founding of Kenya Evangelical Ministries. The past few months have been dedicated to the planning of this celebration, and what a celebration it was! Pastor Chris was invited to preach, and he spoke on Exodus 14, as Fitz interpreted his English into Kikamba language. This message was a great encouragement to all of us. We heard beautiful music from different choirs from 3 churches, and shared a couple of songs  with them. Our team sang “Is He Worthy” and “How Great is our God”, led by Pastor Chris. It is so special to be immersed in their culture, and to also share our own.

kenya day 8 pic 9.JPGAfter the worship service, Lois shared about her life in America with Hoyt before being called to the mission field. She recalled her and Hoyt being abundantly blessed. “We had everything we could possibly want, except joy.” Right around this time, they both felt a strong calling to leave everything behind, and follow God wherever He would take them. She introduced Betty, and told the crowd of believers about Betty and her late husband’s impact. She spoke about the past 30 years, and the faithfulness of the Lord through it all. Through every storm, He has faithfully sustained, guided and kept her. She concluded saying, "The Lord has been moving mightily here in Kenya, and He’s not leaving."

As we head into our second and final week of our time here, we pray for the VBS that will be in a totally new location, with all new children. We pray for their hearts and minds, that they may grasp the concepts we teach them, and have soft  hearts towards the Gospel. Pastor Chris is heading into a week of teaching the KEM pastors.,- In the mean time, Janet is preparing her seminars for all of the pastors’ wives. Thank you for your prayers and encouraging words, we would not be here without your love and support. We are so eager to see how God will use us all in the coming week!

Please continue to pray for the following:

  • For our mental and physical wellness, as a few of us are getting sick.
  • For Pastor Chris, as he heads into a week of teaching the pastors. This week, there will be even more people, so pray for his focus as he is in the lesson development process.
  • For VBS that is going to be in a significantly more rural area, we ask for prayer for our wisdom in leadership, and for our safety.
  • That we would remain flexible, adaptable, and teachable.
  • For time to rest, as we still have a lot to do, and we want to be ready for anything God has for us.

kenya day 5 pic 9Days 2 and 3 of our first week of VBS are now complete! The Lord has supplied us with all we needed - we even received some rain. We are amazed at how He has worked in the hearts of the children, and in our own hearts in such a short time. Our theme on Wednesday was “building your house on the Rock”.. Janet, Charlotte, Olivia, and Alyssa taught the children the song, “The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock” with hand motions. The kids loved joining together in song. Seeing their smiling faces while praising God was precious. We were amazed at how many children attended, over 160!

Wednesday’s schedule ran similarly to Tuesday’s. They listened to the Bible story, played soccer and parachute games on the grass, learned memory verses by heart, and made a craft of their own house on the rock. After VBS, we made the drive to Ebenezer Church for a prayer meeting. These weekly gatherings are dedicated to: the worship of God through song, listening  to His word, and lifting up prayers together. Dave was invited to preach at this event.. He spoke on Acts 20, about Paul exhorting the Ephesian elders. Members of the church were grateful this time spent together, sharing that it encouraged them.

Today, our VBS lesson focused on Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. Many children who attended the day prior brought their siblings and friends along! Janet taught them about the disciples’ unbelief and fear, and Jesus’ ultimate example courage: stepping out in a storm to calm the waves. After this session, VBS week 1 came to a close. We are encouraged, and exhausted, because of the energy the children brought. Would you pray with us for  those who heard the Gospel for the first time? That they would continue to seek , a closer walk with Jesus by attending a local gospel church. Pray that they will remember the truth they learned and the fellowship they shared.

kenya day 5 pic 12.JPG

Pastor Chris concluded his time with the board today. They focused on Paul’s call in Ephesians 4 to be "diligent to preserve” the unity we've received in Christ, noting that we do not “create” unity because Jesus accomplished this in His work of salvation. The question arises, "How do we do that?" They talked through practical ways to carry out this command.

After VBS concluded, we headed to Bethel Church to join another mid week prayer gathering. We arrived to the joyful noise of church members worshipping together. They graciously welcomed us into their fellowship, as their pastor introduced himself and welcomed us. Their pastor is also named Chris, which made everyone in the church laugh. Alyssa and Chris SingChris and Alyssa shared songs with the group, and then our entire team sang “How Great is Our God”. What a special, sweet time of worshiping together! After we finished singing, Dave got up to preach. He gave thanks for how beautiful everyone sounded together, and commented on how remarkable it is that God needs no translator, because we are one in Him. He went on to preach on the power that is in the name of the Lord, and touched on Psalm 23. This message was loved by everyone who heard it, and we parted with full hearts.

Please continue to pray for the following:

  • Praise God for the successful first round of VBS and for the physical strength from him we needed to make it happen.
  • For the children who came to VBS, that they will remember what they learned, and will continue to grow in their faith. And, for those of them who had not yet heard the Gospel, that they will be saved.
  • For the anniversary celebration on Sunday would honor the Lord and commemorate Lois’ 30 years of faithful ministry. That our team would be   helpful in preparations. .
  • For our ongoing mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual strength as a team and as individuals.
  • For next week's VBS with a new set of kids in a new location. That God would prepare the children’s hearts. That God would give us wisdom as we prepare.
  • For Pastor Chris’ class with the pastors next week. That they would be helped and encouraged through next week. That Pastor Chris would be in tune with the Lord as he fine tunes the materials to be shared.

Thank you for all of your faithful prayers! They have been answered! The VBS supplies arrived hours before we started our first session. Last night, a portion of our team went to the airport for the third night in a row in the hopes of picking up the missing luggage. Gideon, one of Lois’ sons, has graciously driven every night, and has lost a great deal of sleep because of it. Our team was weary and disheartened, as this has been quite a journey. Thankfully, after some tactful negotiations and God’s moving, we’ve recovered our missing luggage. All 17 bags are now with us at Lois’, and we are overwhelmed with relief.

After sorting our VBS materials this morning, we made our way to the Bible College for day 1 of VBS. We had hopeful hearts for what could happen, and how the Lord might use us. We ended up with approximately 115 children, praise the Lord! At 10 a.m., they gathered for the start of the day with a lesson and story time from Janet. She taught the children the story of Noah and the flood that wiped out our Earth, and the plan that God had through doing this. Then, we separated them into four groups, and they made their way around our stations for the remainder of the day.

 Kenya Day 3, Pic 1

Dave, Steven, and Kyle played multiple games of soccer with the kids in the field. Olivia led memory verses, and the kids learned John 1:19 by heart today. Alyssa led the crafts, along with Betty’s help, helping them construct their own paper ark with Noah and the animals inside. Charlotte rotated from station to station, helping out with anything that was needed. We’re all reflecting on what an impact these children have had on us already. We are so humbled to serve them, and to teach them of the unconditional love of our Father. Pastor Chris spent this time  continuing his seminar with the board on biblical principles of leadership in pastoral ministry.

Today stretched us and gave us  encouragement for the upcoming days of VBS. We learned a lot in  this first day that will hopefully help the rest of the week to run smoother. In the afternoon, we made our way into Tala the visit the market. Lois helped us exchange our American dollars for Kenya shillings. Fitz and Shad drove us into Tala, and we experienced many streetside shops and vendors and a traditional Kenya supermarket! Tonight, we had the pleasure of celebrating two birthdays at Lois’ home: Bondo, the cook at Lois’ house for almost 20 years, and his lovely 10 year old daughter Winnie. Bondo’s wife, Patricia, his children, and a few others came along. The evening was filled with joy and fellowship.

Please continue to pray for the following:

  • Praise the Lord that our luggage has been found, and is now with us! We cannot express how grateful we are for your prayers on our behalf. Thank you for being a key part of our VBS   supplies arriving just in time.
  • For the remaining days of VBS, and next week’s VBS session, that the Lord would guide our steps giving us increasing wisdom so each day will run smoother than the last.
  • For the hearts of the children who will attend each  VBS session. Tomorrow’s theme is the parable of the wise man building his house on the rock. We hope the children will grasp the message that the Holy Spirit will apply it to there hearts and they will enjoy a lifelong walk with the Lord.
  • Continued prayer for Pastor Chris, as he continues to hone and sharpen the materials for his sessions with the board so the time they spend together will be a blessing to each one. ,
  • For the upcoming 30th anniversary celebration of Lois’ ministry here in Kenya, that the many preparations  will go smoothly and we would be a help to the team here.
  • For our mental and physical wellbeing - specifically, rest, as many of our team members are not sleeping well.

Tonight, we’re thankful for laughter, for new experiences, for fellowship, and for growth. Thank you for praying for us and being a key part of this journey. Onto day 2 of VBS!

Kenya Day 2, Pic 3We awoke to a beautiful morning at Lois’ home today, with a lot of fellowship, and some much needed rest. Pastor Chris went to the Bible College to conduct a directed discussion group with the Board of K.E.M. The rest of the team spent some time in devotions, and harvested maize in the backyard. A special thanks to Nathan, one of Lois’ sons, who loves the Lord deeply with his servant’s heart and gentle spirit. He has lived here with Lois for ten years, and is getting married in two weeks. It has been wonderful to see the bond and friendship between him and Lois.

Later in the day, we met up with Pastor Chris at the Bible College, where we were warmly greeted by the staff. For many of us, it was the first time meeting the entire Board and seeing the campus. It is beautiful and lush, with approximately 5 acres of land. We thank God for the weather we had today, that made the day even better. While at the Bible College, we participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new community center. Located with easy access from the surrounding neighborhood, it will enable the Bible College to help the residents of Kangundo to hold meetings and celebrate significant events. Later, we took a tour of the lovely campus. During this time, we were introduced to our designated areas for serving in the upcoming VBS.

We also spent some time in Fitz’s office, where he shared encouraging updates on the Lord’s work over the years in his ministry to students. Fitz has been a vice moderator at the college for many years, and what a joy it was to hear of the Lord’s work.

In the afternoon, we set up tents for Lois’ 30th anniversary celebration. Thankfully, these will also be used for tomorrow’s VBS ministry. This anniversary, next Sunday, is to honor Lois’ 30 years of being here in Kenya dedicated to K.E.M. Ministries. Initially, these large tents were a bit of a challenge, but with a little patience and a lot of teamwork, they were raised and ready to go. Everyone took part in getting them set up.

Please continue to pray for the following:

  • For the hearts and minds of the children who will attend VBS tomorrow.
  • For our final VBS preparations of supplies and lessons.
  • For our luggage: we praise God that some of the bags arrived last night. However, we are still missing some bags containing VBS supplies, along with personal bags, so we deeply appreciate the prayers. A portion of the team will endure another long drive to and from the airport in the middle of the night. Pray for soft hearted airport employees and a smooth acquisition of the remaining bags.
  • That we may help in every way possible in the preparations for the 30th anniversary celebration.
  • For Pastor Chris as he continues leading directed discussions with the Board at the College, that they would cover exactly what would be most helpful.
  • That each of us would remain “Flexible, Adaptable, and Teachable”.
  • For everyone’s health and physical endurance.

We shared a special time of worship and prayer as a group tonight at Lois’ home, after preparing and improvising for VBS with the materials that we do have. We pray the rest of the bags arrive tonight, but mostly that God will be praised through all of this. He is for us and with us, and we are feeling the strength of your prayers, so thank you, friends. We are so honored to be here, and we give Him all the glory!

Thank you for your faithfulness in praying for all of us. We are only here by the grace of God and by your love, support, and prayers, so being a part of this ministry effort. We thank God for His mighty hand of protection over us as we travelled. We arrived to Lois’ home around 3 am Kenya time, and were thankfully able to make it to church after very little sleep, due to a holdup at the airport. It is now the evening of our first full day here in Kangundo.

The service this morning was a very special time. We travelled out of Kangundo to Saint Joesph’s Church in Machakos, one of the 32 K.E.M. churches! We shared mutual excitement as this warm church family welcomed us into their fellowship. Many of them sang special songs of praise, and the children recited their memory verses. We also shared some songs with them. The women graciously prepared a traditional Kenyan meal for everyone, which allowed for sweet fellowship. Some of us were able to rekindle relationships made on previous trips. Pastor Chris preached from 1 Samuel 13 with the help of an interpreter, and Janet commented on the incredible blessing it is to share such a strong common bond of Christ, even through many barriers. It is clear to see we are one through Him. The team and I walked away from church in awe of what God is doing here, and thankful for this precious time.

Please continue to pray for the following:

  • For us as we prepare to embark upon our VBS and leadership training sessions.
  • We also ask for prayer for our luggage. It did not arrive with us last night.  For this first day of our time here we have not had many of our clothes and personal items. More importantly, all of our VBS materials are in those bags. We are asking God to work in this situation, and that He will receive glory, no matter when the bags arrive.
  • For the hearts of the kids who will be attending VBS.
  • For our endurance physically, mentally, and spiritually, as body clocks adjust.
  • For Pastor Chris as he conducts sessions with the board, that he would be in tune with the Lord in every session, sensitive to His direction as to which materials to emphasize as he gets to know them better.
  • That we would be helpful in preparation for the 30th anniversary celebration.

God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good.

Thank you for walking with us. We look forward to sharing more of our journey in the days to come!

Preparing for Kenya https://www.claytonvalleychurch.com/kenya-team-2019/post/preparing-to-go https://www.claytonvalleychurch.com/kenya-team-2019/post/preparing-to-go#comments Fri, 19 Jul 2019 19:00:00 -0700 https://www.claytonvalleychurch.com/kenya-team-2019/post/preparing-to-go Kenya 2019 Team pic reduced

We are in the process of preparation for our Kenya trip. Thank you for checking in to support us in prayer. Without your intercession before God on our behalf to empower, protect, guide and and work through us, we cannot hope to accomplish anything that really matters. But as you lift us up in prayer we are confident God will do mighty things.

Here are our most pressing prayer items at this time:

  • As Lois, Shad and Fitz work with Charlotte to finalize our itinerary in Kenya, that they would have wisdom and a clear sense of what is good and better and best for our two weeks there.
  • As Michelle Meyer and those helping her finish up prepping and packing VBS materials, that God would give endurance and wisdom so that we have everything needed to carry out our ministry to kids.
  • As Pastor Chris prepares for 10 days of leadership training that he work in tune with the Holy Spirit decerning which passages to spend the most time in and what topics to emphasize the most.
  • As Janet prepares her sessions for the pastor's wives that she would sense the Lord's direction on which topics to emphasize and how best to order the materiel she shares.
  • As each team member prepares everything from bible lessons, to testimonies, to sermons that God would instruct them and stregnthen them for the ministry ahead.
  • That the Lord would provide all of the finances necessary for the trip to be carried out.
  • That God would begin preparing heart each person our team will encounter to receive or be stregnthend in the gospel.

If you would like to be made aware of prayer requests 'real time' while we are away, be sure to check in here at the blog.
